Welcome to the British Commonwealth Club of Michigan!

ImageIncorporated in 1962, the British Commonwealth Club is a social club which was started by a group of immigrant wood model makers from General Motors, who used to hold parties in their respective basements - bringing together people from the 'old country' who had common interests such as dancing, music, sports, and just having fun in good company.

At the time there was a large influx of skilled tradesmen from Britain coming to the Detroit area, and it wasn't long before the average basement was too small to accommodate these new-found friendships.  The next step was to rent a hall and promote regular dances and larger parties.

These events were well attended; admission was quite inexpensive (only $3.50 included dancing, beer, and food).  The beer was pretty awful, but at the time it didn't seem to matter too much.

The 'Mound Road Dance' (as it was known) quickly became the place to be on a monthly basis for a growing number of ex-patriciates, and finances soon grew.  In 1968, a small machine shop property was purchased on one of the main drags in Warren.  The inside was gutted, a bar was installed, dart boards were hung, and the club was born.

It was very spartan in those days, with crates and orange boxes as part of the decor.  The club has come a long way since those days, and can truly boast as being one of the finest non-profit British clubs in the country.

We enjoy a busy calendar of catering and party events, and continue to rely on the dedicated support of a volunteer catering crew that has changed little over the past decade or so.  Our entertainment committee prepares a wide variety of social activities, from the Burns Supper to St. George's Night, from Shout! A Tribute To The Beatles to bingo and trivia.

What started out as a predominately British club may have changed complexion with the times, but our goal, the preservation and demonstration of our centuries-old traditions, has not deviated.  Over the years, members have introduced friends, neighbors, workmates, etc. to our ranks - we have enjoyed the support of not only a large number of American members, but also German, Italian, Polish, Indian, Canadian, etc., creating a unique blend of people with a common goal.  We are indeed a United Nations organization with most of our members recognizing the need to preserve British traditions, heritage, art, and social preferences.

We invite and welcome anyone who would like to learn more about us to stop in and visit the unique, warm and friendly atmosphere we enjoy!
